As a senior, it is highly likely that you have a lot of free time in your hands. One of the things you could do instead of letting it go to waste is to start gardening. It’s a great activity that requires quite some attention and since you have the time, why not? Here are a few more reasons you should start gardening:
1. It’s a way to spend time outdoors
It’s easy to get used to spending time indoors when you have more time in your hands but nothing much to do with it outside. However, gardening means you’ll be able to step outside of the house more often Whether it’s to go buy some seeds and garden supplies, or to check on the existing plants, you will get to benefit from the vitamin D from sunshine. You will also get to breathe in some fresh air that will keep you healthier.
2. You’ll eat better
Unfortunately, most of the food we buy around is full of chemicals and in most cases, you don’t know which ones exactly were used in growing or preserving them. As such, it’s worth growing your own food in your garden. It allows you to harvest and eat food that is healthy. It also allows you to eat fresh food which means you get more nutrients. Remember, certain foods such as vegetables start to lose their nutritional value as soon as they’re plucked. This means that you benefit less from store-bought ones compared to plucking them right when you need to eat them. You can also use less harmful products such as organic fertilizers or those with fewer chemicals while growing them.
3. It helps you grow unique plants
You might have traveled around the world or even your country and come across some interesting plants or flowers that are never grown at your place. In case you loved them that much you could always be a pioneer in your area and grow them. Gardening allows you to create the conditions necessary for the healthy growth of these plants. You get to watch them grow but most of all, you get the satisfaction of being able to have a plant that you really found fascinating in your garden.
4. You can growsome natural medicine
Some plants like Aloe Vera and several others are known to have natural medicinal benefits. You can get them in different supermarkets in form of creams, tablets or even oils. However, nothing beats using them in their authentic form. Gardening allows you to grow these medicinal plants and when you need to use them, all you need to do is pluck a few and you’re good to go.
5. It will help you socialize
When you start gardening, you’ll certainly become more interested in ways to make your garden look better and in making your plants grow healthier and stronger. A good way to find out about these is to interact with people who share in your love for gardening. You’ll get to exchange ideas on gardening and about other aspects of life and you’ll be able to make new friends.
If those five reasons don’t encourage you to get up and start working on your garden then what will? Gardening is worth the effort as you will literally be able to see the fruits of your labor.
