Back before smartphones told you which car to buy, you learned the hard way, usually in a repair shop parking lot with a mechanic shaking his head. The Chevy SSR Looked Fast Standing Still
General Motors built the SSR to turn heads, and it did, with a retractable hardtop and a body that echoed 1940s pickups. Then you started the engine. The retro roadster truck was heavier than it had any business being, and its first-year V8 could not move that bulk with any authority. Reviewers called it sluggish and said the styling wrote checks the drivetrain could not cash. GM eventually bumped the horsepower, but by then buyers had moved on. Production limped along until 2006 before Chevrolet quietly pulled the plug. For a car built entirely around making an impression, the SSR is mostly remembered as a good-looking letdown, proof that a dramatic silhouette cannot make up for a tired engine underneath it.
